I missed last week’s post. I was in Myrtle Beach for the Carolina Food Industry Council’s annual convention — meeting with grocery buyers to discuss our wine and fresh muscadines. I’ll come back to that in a moment, because something that came up in those conversations connects directly to what we’re discussing this month.
Most people who take a daily supplement have never considered where the ingredients actually come from.
Which farm. Which region. Which plant variety. How it was grown, processed, and turned into the thing in the bottle. That information rarely makes it onto a label — and most brands don’t volunteer it because they don’t know it themselves. They bought the ingredient from a supplier who bought it from a broker who sourced it from somewhere overseas, and the trail goes cold fast.

Back to Myrtle Beach. The produce buyers we met at the CFIC convention were interested in many things — shelf placement, pricing, logistics. But what kept coming up, especially among the health-focused buyers, was the health benefits of fresh muscadines. Not just as a fruit, but as a functional food.
That’s a shift. For most of the history of fresh muscadine sales, the conversation has focused on flavor and seasonality. Now buyers want to know what the fruit actually does. That’s the market catching up to what research has been saying for years — and it’s a signal worth paying attention to.
